There’s nothing quite like cuddling under a blanket with your family to watch a movie together. Making your movie nights English movie nights with some fun animated films can enrich your family bonding with ESL practice!

Watching movies is a great way to bond with your children while practicing a second language.

If your child is new to English, I suggest watching the movie first in their first language before watching it in English. Additionally, you can put in subtitles in their first language and work towards transitioning to English subtitles and then no subtitles.

I find changing the audio language for movies works best with animated movies, so here is my top 10 list of English animated movies that you should watch with your kids!

Movies can be a valuable and enjoyable tool for language learning due to several reasons:

The combination of visuals and audio in movies appeals to both visual and auditory learners. Watching characters speak, observing body language, and hearing the language spoken contribute to a more holistic language learning experience.

Movie scenes provide rich contexts that aid in understanding the meaning of words and expressions. Movies are inherently entertaining, making the language learning process more enjoyable and engaging. Increased interest and motivation can lead to more sustained and effective learning experiences!

Language learners can watch at their own pace and convenience, allowing for flexibility in scheduling learning sessions. We suggest using subtitles as an aid understanding, and learners can pause, rewind, or re-watch scenes as needed!

Repeated exposure to certain phrases and expressions allows for reinforcement and better retention of language elements. Learners may encounter similar language patterns, enhancing their ability to recall and use them.

We hope you will try these films for your child’s language learning journey! Next time you know what to do during a bad weather day!

Make sure to use all the possible tools that your child is interested in to your advantage! When they are interested, learning will complement whatever they are doing!
