Why Human Connection Still Matters in Language Learning for Kids in the Age of AI – 2025

At Langmobile, with over 25 years of in-person teaching experience and three years of online instruction, we’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of human connection in language education. Every class, whether held in a physical space or through a screen, offers proof of how crucial teachers are in shaping not just academic outcomes, but also children’s emotional and social development.
Human connection remains at the heart of meaningful education. While we acknowledge the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing role in the education sector, we firmly believe that AI should serve as a tool to support—rather than replace—human educators. Technology can be incredibly powerful when used with intention, but it cannot replicate the empathy, responsiveness, and creativity that trained teachers bring to a learning environment.
Recent discussions in the educational community have sparked debate around the potential for AI to take over classroom instruction. For instance, Duolingo’s CEO, Luis von Ahn, made headlines when he suggested that AI could soon replace language teachers altogether (Radio-Canada, 2024). While AI may be capable of providing personalized learning paths, grammar drills, or pronunciation feedback, it lacks the nuanced understanding of children’s needs and the ability to build authentic human relationships, which are grounded in human connection and emotional presence.
Research continues to reinforce the indispensable role of teachers in early language development, where human connection plays a central role. A study published in the International Journal of Educational Research emphasizes that educators significantly contribute to children’s linguistic and cognitive growth through interactive and creative practices. Activities such as storytelling, singing, and play are not only effective for teaching vocabulary and grammar, but they also build emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and collaborative skills—all critical components of a well-rounded education.
Furthermore, the World Economic Forum has weighed in on this issue, emphasizing that while AI has the potential to be a powerful aid in education, teachers must remain central to educational systems (World Economic Forum, 2024). Human educators foster a love of learning, model empathy and communication, and provide mentorship and human connection—none of which AI can authentically offer. In this context, AI becomes a tool, not a substitute, reinforcing the work teachers are already doing with their students rather than attempting to replicate it.
At Langmobile, we’ve adopted a balanced approach that integrates technology without diminishing the value of teacher-led instruction. Our educators use AI-powered resources to enhance lessons, offering dynamic content and personalized practice opportunities to meet individual student needs. However, these tools are always used in conjunction with live teaching. Our instructors guide students through challenges, adapt to their learning styles in real time, and respond to their emotional cues—something machines are not equipped to handle.
We also remain deeply committed to the value of play-based learning, which has long been a cornerstone of our teaching philosophy. Play encourages natural language acquisition, improves retention, and creates joyful learning experiences. This method aligns with the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which views the teacher as a co-learner and emphasizes the importance of human connection, relationships, and community in the learning process. In a play-based, teacher-led environment, children are free to express themselves, explore language in context, and develop a deep, lasting understanding.
As technology evolves, so too must our approach to education. However, progress should not come at the expense of what we know works: the human connection. Children need guidance, encouragement, and meaningful interaction—elements that can only come from people who care about their students’ growth.
In conclusion, while AI can offer helpful tools and engaging content, it cannot replicate the human connection and qualities that make teachers so effective. At Langmobile, we believe that the heart of language learning lies in connection, creativity, and care. By blending the best of technology with the irreplaceable presence of skilled educators, we ensure our students thrive—linguistically, socially, and emotionally.
