We are all looking for ways to spend time outside in the winter with our children, and sometimes the backyard is as good as it’s going to get. These DIY ice lanterns don’t let the cold weather get in the way of creativity…in fact, they need it! They are made for outdoor kid friendly winter fun.

Kids Winter DIY – Ice Lanterns

Materials needed:

  • Water
  • 12” Helium quality balloons
  • Towel
  • Bowls
  • Scissors
  • Battery operated tea lights
  • Cold weather

How to Make DIY Winter Ice Lanterns:

  1. Fill a balloon to the size of a small bowling ball.
  2. Tie a knot at the top of the balloon, leaving some air at the top. The more air that you leave the more room you will have to put the candle inside the lantern.
  3. Dry off the balloon with a towel.
  4. Carefully set the balloon inside a bowl.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 with as many balloons as you would like lanterns.
  6. Leave them outside to freeze for approximately 10 hours.
  7. Cut the tops of each balloon and peel the balloons off the lanterns.
  8. Drain the water from the insides of the lanterns.
  9. Put a tealight inside each one and enjoy the beautiful glow!

There are so many variations on this idea using different materials and colors. Have a look at Little Green Explorers take using greens and containers, or Handmade Charlotte’s colorful painted lanterns to see what we mean! If you are doing Langmobile’s, we suggest starting these DIY ice lanterns early in the daytime indoors. While you wait let the children build a snow fort or igloo to prepare for a twinkly starry night adventure. By the time it’s nighttime the ice lanterns will be ready and so will everybody else!

We at Langmobile are wishing you a happy day and night DIY-ing!
