Homemade Sweet Apple Butter

Apple Butter- A last minute holiday gift recipe that’s easy and healthy is not easy to find. With Christmas just around the corner I had been looking for something that was no fuss, no stress, and most importantly, that my friends and family would enjoy.

I don’t mean to brag…but…I think I found it!

Slow cooker apple butter.

Before you confuse it with it’s sister, apple sauce, let me clarify. Apple butter is a spread you can put on toast, dip fruit into, pair with cheese, or put on the side of savory dishes. What differentiates it from applesauce is that it becomes sweeter, richer in color, and thicker the longer you let it cook. My favorite part about it is that because it’s so naturally sweet, kids love it!

Did I mention, it’s allergy friendly, vegan, healthy, easy, has no sugar added, and that it’s inexpensive to make?

Okay, I’ve boasted about this holiday gift long enough. There are many versions of no sugar added apple butter by some amazing bloggers including Family Food on the Table, the Hint of Rosemary, and I heart naptime. Here is my simplified version:

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds gala apples
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Core and quarter the apples
  • Put them in the slow cooker
  • Add the rest of the ingredients and mix
  • Cook on high for 2 hours
  • Mix again
  • Cook on high for 3 hours
  • Blend using an immersion blender
  • Let cool and jar *Lasts for 2 weeks, refrigerated*

I’m so happy with how convenient and stress-free it was to make these holiday gifts. I essentially just popped everything into the slow-cooker and waited for the fun part. Wrapping! To wrap each apple butter jar I placed two apples on top of each jar, and wrapped them in cellophane. They looked so cute! I could have stopped there, but I had some apple butter leftover so I thought I would give this recipe for healthy apple butter cookies a try. They turned out too tasty not to share with you too.

Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful season! We will be posting some fun family activities to do over the on Christmas day so if you are looking for some zero preparation ideas, we’ll see you then!

They especially love it when they play with family and find meaningful moments.
